Agricultural Landscape


Eastern Ontario is home to a world-renowned industrial dairy farming area, various thriving farming communities and agricultural settlements. It also contains other farming areas that are not so rich, extensive or productive, some that are marginal in nature and some that have been abandoned. Farming was an original occupation of early settlers and that function has continued until today.  The farming fields based on the original land surveys have shaped the location of roads and settlements and continue to influence the location and extend of urban expansion. The types of farms found in Eastern Ontario include dairy farms, crop farms, specialty crop farms and market gardens on the edge of Ottawa and Kingston.
